Field Notebook

Capture notes, pictures, and recordings.  They're tagged with your location and the time, and are displayed on a map.  If you're looking after or managing a property, enter its boundary to see it and satellite images (US only) in the background.  The images are stored so you don't need a net connection when you're outside.  If you're working on more than one property, combine them into sets to quickly switch between them on the map.  Search for notes, or look at a summary of what you've done recently.

The notebook is inspired by the work that Land Stewards do for the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests.  The Society is one of the largest conservation groups in the state, with over 160 properties and 50,000 acres.  They set up the Land Steward program of volunteers to monitor and take care of  the properties - maintaining trails, signs and kiosks, cleaning up, walking the land, and helping to promote the woods and the Society.  Then notebook is meant to be a simple tool to document what you've seen and done, using the phone that you carry around, even if you're in places where there isn't a signal.  We and the app aren't associated with SPNHF - we're just big fans of their work to preserve the mountains and forests of New Hampshire.

You can also download the application here.  Copy it to your device and tap on the file to install it.

The app requires network access to download the background images, access to external storage to save copies of your notes, and GPS information for location.

Using It

When you start the app for the first time, you'll be asked if you want to see some help.   These are short messages that describe how to use the program.  You'll only see them the first time through.

There's also a User Guide (PDF) available that describes in more detail how to use the app.
